CAF President mourns ex-Egypt star Basry
CAF President Issa Hayatou has expressed shock at the death of former Egypt midfielder Taha Basry.
Basry, a Zamalek legend passed away on Wednesday, 2 April 2014 at a Cairo hospital after a protracted illness. He was 68.
“On behalf of the CAF Executive Committee and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and the bereaved family. My thoughts are with them at this difficult moment,” Hayatou said.
Basry joined Zamalek in 1965 and was a member of the team that won the Egyptian League title during the 1977/78 season and two Egyptian Cups in 1975 and 1977.
He featured at three Africa Cup of Nations; 1970, 1974 and 1976, as well as appearing at the 1986 edition as a member of the Pharaohs coaching staff. He was also named Egyptian Footballer of the Year for the 1977/78 season.
As a coach, he had stints with ENPPI, Arab Contractors, Ghazl El-Mahalla and Petrojet.
