Atletico Madrid win first La Liga title in 18 years

Atletico are also in the Champions League Final.
Atletico Madrid have emerged as the new Spanish La Liga Champions after securing a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp against Barcelona Saturday evening.

The league triumph is the first in 18 years for Coach Diego Simeone’s side who are also in the run to win the UEFA Champions League as they will face city rivals, Real Madrid, in the final next Saturday.

Knowing that only victory will save their largely disappointing season, Barca took the lead in the 34th minute when Alexis Sanchez unleashed a vicious strike from a tight angle that flew past Thibaut Courtois and into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Tata Martino’s men kept the advantage going to the break as they were all smiles with the belief that they are 45 minutes away from keeping their La Liga crown. However, Atletico broke the heart of Barcelona fans who filled Camp Nou when barely four minutes into the second half, Diego Godin drew them level with a bullet header from Gabi’s corner.

The draw saw Atletico clinch their first La Liga title in 18 years and also puncturing the 10 years duopoly hitherto enjoyed by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Unfortunately, while Atletico will be celebrating their triumph in the near perfect evening at Nou Camp, their celebration was dented with the injury suffered by the duo of Diego Costa and Arda Turan who were both substituted in the first half and could miss the Champions League final.

Atletico finished the season with 90 points from 38 games compared to Barcelona’s 87 points, same as Real Madrid.
